Landmarks

Werribee Open Range Zoo is the big paid attraction, and a water play area is mapped inside the zoo grounds. Werribee Park, about a kilometre from the zoo, covers about 108 hectares. On the coast there's the main Werribee South beach plus Northern Beach and Southern Beach, and part of the beach is a dog off-leash area. The playground at J D Bellin Reserve is one of the council's larger district playgrounds, and there's a skate park on Beach Road about 300 metres from the main beach. The Werribee River Trail, the Federation Trail, the Wyndham Bay Trail and the K Road Cliffs Path all pass through the suburb, so it's easy to combine a ride with a beach stop.

Getting around

There's no train station in Werribee South. Werribee Station on the metro Werribee line is about 8 kilometres from the suburb centre, and bus 439 runs through the suburb. Most families will drive. Werribee is about 11 minutes away, Hoppers Crossing about 15, Point Cook about 17 and the Melbourne CBD about 37, without traffic.

Best for

A full day out, pairing the zoo or Werribee Park with the beach. Free days at the beach, the playground and the trails. Families with a dog, thanks to the off-leash section of the beach. Mixed ages, with a district playground for little ones and a skate park for older kids.

Werribee is the closest town centre, with the library, the outdoor pool and more playgrounds. Point Cook has more coastline, three skate parks and the RAAF Museum. Cocoroc, next door, includes part of Werribee Regional Park.
